The Christmas period and over New Year is the most popular time of year to propose. Surrounded by loved ones, it’s the ideal time to make it official. A number of engagement ring experts gave Express.co.uk the run down on the best engagement rings to buy for your soon-to-be fiance ahead of next year.
Engagement ring trends
Engagement ring trends come and go over the years, but one perennially popular style is the solitaire, a single stone on a plain band.
David Allen, engagement ring expert at Purely Diamonds said: “This simple but elegant style is the perfect choice for any diamond cut and band colour combination.
“This ring style draws in 4,800 monthly searches and has seen a significant rise in popularity in the last year.”
Lorna Haddon, head of diamonds and jewellery at Beaverbrooks the Jewellers told Express.co.uk: “They don’t call it a classic for nothing! A traditional solitaire ring is the ultimate in sophistication and timeless style.”

Halo engagement rings
These rings feature a large centre stone ringed with smaller diamonds for extra sparkle factor.

Expert Laure added: “Some things never change, and halo rings absolutely fall into that category – this stunning style is here to stay!
“Halo rings are cut so that they catch the light at all times for a truly breath-taking sparkle, adored by our customers and us too!”
She went on to recommend a pear-shape diamond, adding: “Pear-shaped diamonds have seen a real resurgence in 2020, with fashion-first celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski adorning the stunning shape.”

Three stone rings
Why choose a ring with one stone when you can have multiple stones?
This style of ring, similar to Meghan Markle’s three diamond piece from Prince Harry, is sometimes referred to as triology rings with one stone to represent the past, one the present and one the future.
David said: “This ring is a beautiful reminder of the love you share in the past, present, and future which makes this piece extra meaningful.
“Holding first place in this list for search increase with a massive 100/100 for trends, as the year comes to a close this will be a sure hit in 2021.”
Engagement rings with gallery detail
A more unusual trend emerging this year is more focused on the band of the ring itself, rather than the big central stone.
Laura said: “One trend I’m expecting to see gain momentum in 2021 is gallery detailing.
“The gallery of the ring is the part that is visible from the side view, upon which the centre stone is mounted.
“It’s such a sweet and subtle way of adding personality to a ring, whether it’s an intricate love heart or infinity symbol to represent your everlasting love.”
Amal Clooney’s ring from Hollywood actor George features stunning shank detail either side of a seven carat emerald cut diamond.
Princess Beatrice’s ring also features shank detail. The ring, made by Shaun Leane, features one large brilliant cut solitare.
Then on the shank either side of the main stone are two smaller round diamonds, a baguette diamond and then the band is set with smaller round diamonds.
Split shank engagement rings
Another band-focused engagement ring trend is the split shank ring.
Another royal engagement ring, that of Zara Tindall, is of this style.
Laura said: “A split shank engagement ring is a very distinctive style we’re seeing increase in popularity, with a band that parts as it reaches the centre stone.
“The shape of the split shank frames the centre diamond beautifully, and as it’s the style of Beyoncé’s engagement ring, you’d be in good company.”
Beyonce’s huge cushion cut ring sits on two slender diamond pave bands.
Coloured stone engagement rings
Last but not least, a coloured stone may look like a unique choice than the diamond ring, but it is actually more traditional than a clear stone.
Laura said: “A classic style we anticipate still being popular in the coming year is coloured gems for the central stone. From birth stones to classic precious gems such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds, a pop of colour is a really eye-catching feature for an engagement ring.
“With its regal heritage, a sapphire is a timeless choice for an engagement ring with a splash of colour – think Kate Middleton’s iconic oval blue sapphire.”
Other famous engagement rings that featured coloured stones are a number of royal rings.
This includes Princess Eugenie, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret.
Boris Johnson proposed to Carrie Symonds with vintage emerald ring.
Actress Lily Collins recently became engaged with a stone from fiance Charlie McDowell. The ring features a pale pink rose-cut diamond.
It’s not just engagement rings that are subject to trends.
The wedding band, placed on the finger during the ceremony, also boasts a number of trends this year.
These, according The Beaverbrooks Journal, include hidden messages.
Wedding rings that are specifically shaped to fit around engagement rings are also popular.
Celebrity engagement rings are known for being lavish, as they are bought with no expense spared.
Liam Payne’s girlfriend Maya Henry flaunted a £3million emerald-cut diamond engagement ring recently on a night out in London.
More details about the ring are yet to emerge, however, it appeared to be a relatively simple design.
It boasts a huge emerald cut diamond, a currently pretty fashionable shape, on a platinum or white gold band.
