As we make our way through the first month of the year, Body Fit Training founder and joint CEO Cameron Falloon has put together some insights into the fitness trends he expects to dominate the industry in 2021.
COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the fitness industry in 2020, with closures of fitness studios all around the world. It continues to evolve, though, with a growing desire from gym members to access unique tech and boutique experiences, have greater accessibility and freedom within training, and to feel part of a community.
Exercising for mental health
Stress can be a good thing… in small doses. Unfortunately, exacerbated by the stresses of working from home and remote learning in 2020, 7 out of 10 people suffer from stress and/or anxiety on a daily basis.

This is why exercise is considered vital for maintaining mental fitness as it can reduce stress, fatigue, and improve concentration, elevate and stabilise mood and enhance overall cognitive function.
Having access to workout equipment this year has forced people to think outside the box for their strength training – think rice bags and water jugs – but it didn’t change the increasing desire from a broader cross-section of society to incorporate weights into their fitness routine.
There are enormous benefits to using weights, including improving your posture, increasing bone density, reducing the risk of fractures and can even improve flexibility in joints.
The importance of community
With ‘isolation’ and ‘lockdown’ being the vocabulary of 2020, it comes as no surprise that people are seeking out connection, community and group training environments.
Working out in a community group is a great alternative to elevate fitness training for those who have been stuck at home. Group training is a great way to keep you focused and committed to your goals – becoming part of a training team keeps you accountable, provides support and recognition for your progress, and is a great way to meet other like-minded people within your community.
Wearable fitness technologies such as smartwatches, heart rate monitors or fitness trackers have become a key part of today’s fitness culture, and the industry is only expanding. According to Gartner, the global wearable device market is set to be worth an incredible US $87 billion in 2023.
Gone are the days of smashing out a crazy hard workout, being sore for DAYS, avoiding the stairs and not listening to your body. In 2021, movement quality will outweigh movement quantity, meaning we will stay active while reducing the risk of injury.
Fitness professionals are more interested in improving the way their clients move which means an increased ability to perform at a higher level and stay healthy for longer. It’s all about the foundational movements.
High hygiene standards
COVID-19 has forced us and others in the fitness industry to up our game and ensure that we are offering the highest level of hygiene standards possible to keep our members safe.
This includes enforcing relevant social distancing requirements, disinfecting between and during classes, and wiping down surfaces and equipment after use.
