Sun drenched: We reveal some of the best products around to keep you protected from the summer rays

Soltan Ultra Resistance Suncare Protection Stick SPF50 (£5.49, Boots)

This solid stick-sunscreen gives extra protection against sun, wind, water and  extreme cold. Sweat and water-resistant, it also hydrates skin to prevent it drying out. Easy to apply when on the go.

Soleil Sensitive Sun Spray SPF30 (£3.50, Tesco)

A hypo-allergenic spray, this fragrance-free lotion helps prevent skin becoming irritated by the sun or heat. It also contains vitamin E to help prevent premature ageing. Although water-resistant, it’s best to reapply every couple of hours.

Shiseido Sun Protection  Stick Foundation SPF30,  (£27, John Lewis)

For those who like some coverage in the sun without piling on heavy foundation, this is perfect. It comes in an easy-to-apply stick, gliding on to skin and giving a light but effective coverage. Available in three shades, with the bonus of great sun protection.

Elizabeth Arden Eight-Hour Targeted Sun Defence Stick SPF50, (£20, counters nationwide)

A handy sunstick combining the benefits of the iconic eight-hour cream with water and perspiration-resistant sun protection. The bright yellow casing makes it easy to find at the bottom of your handbag, and it’s great for touching up sensitive areas such as the face, shoulders, décolleté and neck.

Soltan Once Waterplay Kids (£15.99, Boots)

Grabbing kids to apply more suntan lotion while they’re having fun in the sun can be difficult. Which is why I love this water-resistant lotion that gives up to six hours’ protection in the sun, and three hours’ protection in the water, with an SPF50. It’s a milky, non-sticky lotion that absorbs quickly.

St Tropez High Sun Protection  For Face with Tan Enhancer (£15, Boots)

Using ‘melanobronze’, an ingredient that helps to stimulate the skin’s melatonin, this face lotion does three jobs. First, it protects skin with an SPF15, helps the face to gently tan, and moisturises your skin with vitamin E and prickly pear extract.

Hawaiian Tropic Mango Crème Aftersun  (£9.99, Boots)

Enriched with shea and mango butters and natural oils, this is a lovely rich aftersun that smells of tropical holidays, and really replenishes skin after a day in the sun.

Clarins 50+ UVA/UVB Sun Wrinkle Control Cream For Face (£17,

A high-protection, light lotion that’s ideal for wearing all-year-round on top of moisturiser. It doesn’t clog skin or leave an oily residue.

Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil (£13,

Sun, chlorine and seawater can be harsh on hair, especially if it has been coloured. This non-greasy spray helps to stop hair cuticles splitting, and also helps to  maintain the hair’s elasticity and strength, leaving it glossy.

Johnsons Baby Suncare Lotion SPF50+ (£10.71, Boots)

A mild and gentle lotion specially formulated for babies’ sensitive skin. Rich and milky, it gives complete protection. Apply three teaspoons to cover a baby’s body and face.

Decleor Aromessence  Solaire Body Tan Activator,  (£43,

A natural serum with a silky texture which helps prepare skin for tanning. With essential oils of camomile and geranium, it glides on, leaving skin smelling wonderful. A warning though: it doesn’t contain an SPF, so should be used before applying sunscreen.

Solait After Sun &  Insect Repellent  (£7.99, Superdrug)

While some insect repellent sprays can smell overpowering, this aftersun combined with repellent smells great, and soothes and moisturises your skin at the same time.

Nivea Sun Protect & Bronze, from  (£12.55, Boots)

This light, non-greasy lotion protects skin, with SPFs 10, 20, 30 or 50, while enhancing the skin’s own tanning ability. It works by increasing skin’s melanin production and doesn’t contain any self-tan.

Delph Travel Size (£4.99,

A handy-sized  bottle that can be kept in your handbag for unexpected sunny days, or to touch up sunscreen. It is a milky lotion that won’t irritate  sensitive skin, and the lid snaps on firmly, so there’s no risk of a messy spillage.

Nothing brightens your face better than blusher – and with a bit of insider knowledge it could become the hardest working product in your make-up bag . . .

Apply blusher higher than normal, about an inch under your eye.

Then extend it out over your cheeks. It pulls everything up and gives you a youthful bloom.

TRY: L’Oreal True Match Blush in True Rose, £7.69 (

This works best with blusher sticks, especially those with a tiny touch of sparkle.

Steer clear of bright pinks or strong reds and try soft, muted bronze shades. Apply directly to your eyelids using the tip of your finger — but use sparingly.

TRY: Nars The Multiple         in St Barts, £29 (

If the shade is right, use blusher to highlight your browbones, cheekbones and bring a subtle sheen to your skin. Apply using an eyeshadow brush to your brows and blusher brush to the tops of your cheeks and forehead.

TRY: Diorblush Glowing Color Powder Blush in Paradise Pink, £28 (

Works best with gel blushers. Mix a tiny amount with foundation.

For skin in good condition, blend with day-cream and skip the base.

TRY: Pixi Cheek Gel in Natural, £12.50 (

This trick cuts down on space in your make-up bag.

Apply carefully to your cheeks, avoiding smudges and pat the residue on to your lips.

TRY: Benefit                      Cha Cha Tint, £24.50, (

Pick a coppery tone. For a natural look, apply to forehead, cheeks, across the bridge of your nose and sweep across your neck and décolleté.

TRY: MyFace Cosmetics R&B Blusher in              Sul’Tan Of Swing, £9.99 (
